a little bit of rhubarb

A happy day in the office.

The company I work for has been involved with a long-term project involving the restoration and adaptation of the State Theatre. It was constructed in 1929 as the glitziest picture palace and had the most incredible (read 'over the top') fitout. However, during World War II the gargoyles and other decorative features on the facade were removed -for 'security' purposes- and never replaced. We figure that these were probably made of not much more than chicken wire and paper mache and probably crumbled away when attempts were made to remove them. The picture palace was all show and no substance.

As part of the restoration works, a team was brought on board to reconstruct the gargoyles, knights and lions that once defended its exterior.

These are the first of the reconstructed gargoyles to go up- I call them Statler and Waldorf after the characters from the Muppets.

In a few days' time, they'll be joined by the knights.
