candied lemon...

...peels

from the meyer lemons i told you about the other day...

although it's a semi-nice day out - the wind is whipping something fierce - and my head is raging just a tad... so i decided to stay inside - try something different with those lemons... this is a super simple recipe people - the end result being rinds tasting kind of like lemon drops... remember those? i'm certain they still sell them in the stores - my grandma used to buy them all the time...

anyway to make these: just make a simple syrup by bringing a cup of sugar + a cup of water just to boil on the stove - you only want to see tiny bubbles around the outside edges of the saucepan, 'kay? then remove it from the heat... while it's heating though - peel off strips of skin from the lemons - leaving the white pith behind - slice it into matchsticks... drop it into the sugar water (after it's boiled) for 20 minutes to steep... then pull 'em out of the water with a fork - roll in a cup of sugar to coat... and let dry for an hour or so... yummy!

if you're so inclined... i hear that the leftover sugar water - makes the most delious meyer lemon martini... use 2 oz vodka, 1 oz lemon sugar syrup, 1 strip candied lemon peel... put a martini glass in the freezer to chill - fill a martini shaker with ice - add vodka and syrup - do the shake, shake, shake gently to mix... strain into chilled martini glass. make it pretty with a strip of candied lemon peel you just made... how fun is that?

i imagine you could do this same thing - with a regular lemon, a lime, an orange... with similar results... there's just something about those meyer lemons - the taste is amazing - believe me when i say - it's' made for...

a

happy day.....
