The Kirk of Calder
This 16th century church in Mid Calder, stands on the site of the previous 12th century kirk consecrated St. Cuthbert's Kirk
It was intended that it should be a large collegiate church with cloisters along the north wall and a great knave to the west in the shape of a large cross. However the Scottish Reformation in 1560 stopped all church building and at that time only the choir or top of the cross had been built. This was used as the presbyterian parish church and named St John's Kirk. In the 19th century there was little room for the growing congregation and so the landowners of the parish built the transcepts across the end of the Church and the Communion table was brought to the new end which opened up the church for more worshippers. It has a long and interesting history and is open to the public on Sunday afternoons between 2 and 4pm in May until September.
