Buster
Sentiment got the better of me today at the auction. Many of the lots were completely out of my price range. There were 2 paintings by Aspatria born Sheila Fell who was a good friend of L.S. Lowry that went under the hammer for £13k & £18k!
I ended up buying poor old Buster the Bulldog from the Herbert & Mary Jackson estate. Not necesarily a picture of choice, however as mentioned in yesterdays blip, they kept Bulldogs, Buster being one of them and insisted on using my Grandad as their vet. My Grandad was unlike todays veterinary surgeons and more like James Herriot. He used many traditional remedies and it wouldn't surprise me if he had plonked the plaster on this poor dog. Although I will never know for certain if he did, I told the auctioneer my story and he said that I should write this tale on the back of the picture and by doing so will add even more provenance to the painting!
