Great Expectations
Another round of placement tests (check out my previous blip) took place today for our diploma course. Many students bring their parents along for moral support, a few of whom can be seen here looking into the exam hall.
Two students arrived today wearing a Niqab, a piece of cloth which covers the face. It's actually very unusual to see these in and around Muscat and I was quite surprised to see how they were dealt with.
One of our administration staff (an Omani woman called Hanaa) asked them to remove their Niqabs to which they showed obvious discomfort. After much pressing, they eventually obliged, but then spent the rest of the exam trying to write the answers whilst covering their faces with their hands at the same time.
According to Hanaa, Sultan Qaboos (the ruler of Oman), doesn't allow the wearing of Niqabs in government buildings. The main reason (which I verified with a couple of Omani colleagues) is that there are some 'naughty' boys who will dress up in full Islamic clothing (including Niqab) for the sole purpose of entering 'women only' areas for a sneaky peek! Unbelievable, but true!
