A swim in the south Atlantic before breakfast. It was the best way to start the day. Followed by the best fresh mango juice.


The beach is beyond the dunes that cover the original village of Itaúnas, behind them is the tidal river along which slaves were rowed before being sold to work in the plantations. It was sobering to think that the great beauty we were seeing was also witnessed in a completely different light by the slaves on the ships from Africa.
