Painting the Town Red #2

WHY DO THE BIRDS SIT ON TOP OF THINGS LOOKING AT THE SUN AT SUNSET???

I first noticed it here but now I see it all the time, especially as I get home from work at around that time.

It is actually starting to annoy me. If you look up all you can see is birds sitting on chimneys/roof tops/apexes/lamposts ANYTHING high up and they all just sit there absolutely still and silent watching the sun.

Is it some weird bird cult ritual?
