NZ Fur Seal

I'm staying in Kaikoura at a lovely seaside cottage with my friend Geoff for a few days.

We went for a walk near a river just south of the town where we saw some incredibly cute New Zealand fur seal pups frolicking about in the water. The river acts as a 'creche' of sorts, parents can swim off to the open sea to catch food while junior plays in a safe and sound environment.

I was gob smacked how close they came to us. Here is a picture of one curious specimen investigating Geoff's hand.

Of course it was only after this encounter that we saw the signs telling us that the seals can bite bite and where told by a tourist that they can also transmit some nasty infections to humans.
