Today's slurp's like wine: beautiful ruby beetroot

Beetroot, carrots, cucumber and celery.

How come I can't grow beets? We got a few gnarled items in the veg patch last year that only lasted a few weeks. Will obviously have to try harder in 2012, as this ruby red juice always perks me up. The leaves are tasty, too (steamed).
