Water Is Best?
Went to Newcastle today - a wonderful, sunny, warm Newcastle.
Had a few things to do there including a visit to The Tourist Board to book up for some day trips by coach. I booked 3 trips:~
Eden Camp in Yorkshire. Going in April. Info HERE
Whitby. Going in May.
Settle to Carlisle Railway - steam train. Consisting of 72 miles of track with 17 major viaducts spanning the ravines and 14 tunnels. Going in May.
Still perusing brochures for longer trips but thought a few day trips would be a good idea.
I had a wander round town looking for something to blip. I chose this Drinking Fountain dated 1894 which is at the top of The Bigg Market. It is octagonal, made of red sandstone and extremely ornate. It's a Grade 2 listed building.
It was erected by the Band of Hope Union in memory of J.H. Rutherford who was influential as a preacher, doctor, educationalist and a friend to the poor. It contains the legend "Water Is Best" on a shield on one of the panels, which is ironic as it is sited in an area that is world famous, or possibly infamous, for its bars and fun-pubs.
