Pennies from heaven?

I got on the bus this morning, put my money down and asked for a "Return to town please."

The driver looked at me and said "Oh no, you don't have to pay. You can go free."

I was so surprised I never even asked him why, I just went and sat down. Unfortunately the same thing didn't happen on the return journey and I had to pay just like everyone else.

I don't think I really do look like a pensioner, and in fact I'm only 58, so I wonder what was going on in his mind?
