from behind the curtain
when i was a girl, my big brother said i had ugly knees. but with trees to climb and forts to raid, i had little time to devote to trivial matters like knees. so i wadded up his words and shoved them deep down inside for safe keeping . . . for the day when i'd have ample time to dwell on my ugly knees and everything else that was 'wrong' with me.
throughout the years, i've never liked my legs. oh, i wore shorts aplenty, but when it came to looking feminine, i'd conceal my ugly knees, baring only my lower calves and ankles. i liked my ankles :)
after half a century, i've finally come to peace with these legs . . . the only legs i'll ever have. i've inspected my knees and decided that they work well enough, and i refuse to waste even one minute of my precious lifetime contemplating whether they're 'ugly' or not.
i have trees to climb and forts to raid.
