Into The Woods
Or is it "The Trees They Grow So High"?
These trees are planted very close to the route of the Antonine Wall, a wall built on the orders of Roman Emperor Antonius around the year AD140. It marked the northernmost part of the Roman Empire in Britain.
However, at the end of a massive supply chain and in inhospitable territory, it wasn't a position that could be held for long, and so the wall was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Now the course of the wall is hard to discern, but according to local signposts, it was round about here!
I was taken by how tall and straight the trees had all grown - this must be sheltered from the prevailing wind!
