Country File

What's wrong with this picture?

...What's wrong is that this is our biggest hayfield on the farm and as you can see it is still uncut in the middle of September. Usually the hay is collected in July and August. The weather this 'summer' has been so abysmal that our fields have never been harvested. It's the first time my Dad can ever remember this happening, and he has been farming for over 65 years. When I was out in the field this morning, the ground was just squelching beneath my feet, still waterlogged. Don't think there's any hope of harvesting now, even for silage. We'll have to buy in winter feed for the sheep and the farmer who harvests our fields these days (since Dad retired from that aspect of the job) and keeps some of the produce in return will have to find hay from elsewhere too. There must be so many farmers all over the country having terrible problems, not least those whose crops are their livelihood, sold to supermarkets and the like. I think food prices will keep rising this winter.
