New willow and old stone

Devorgilla Bridge over the River Nith in Dumfries.

The original bridge, probably made of wood, dates back to around 1290 and is thought to have been funded by Lady Devorgilla, who is also said to have been founder of Balliol College.

A juuxtaposition of new growth and old stone. Local sandstone, the origins of this dating back very many millenia to when this part of Britain was under the sea. The sandstone is a rich red with very few imperfections, and can has been used in many fine buildings, one of these being Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey, now a Historic Scotland property.
