Avatar Grove

A small grove of giant red cedar, douglas fir and hemlock trees was recently discovered near Port Renfrew, BC, on Vancouver Island. Normally slated for logging, a group of people lobbied to save it as a park. They won (it is now a park) partly because of the clever choice of the word Avatar which has currency both in virtual worlds and of course the movie. It is near Carmanah-Walbran park, also famous for some ginormous trees.

The base, shown here, is about 4 metres across. This is not the "gnarliest tree in Canada", which is a few hundred metres away.
