Celebrating new life

Easter Sunday, and I had plans for something cruciform, or empty, like the tomb. But Easter Sunday was also the traditional time for baptisms, of entry to the Christian community.

My work takes me to many churches in Edinburgh. Today I was at one where two babies were baptised and we celebrated Communion together. It was a beautiful service, sacraments of water and of bread and wine.

This is the font, with jug from which the elder siblings of the babies poured water into the font. The jug bears the coat of arms of the city of Edinburgh, with its motto "Nisi Dominus Frustra" - from Psalm 127 - "Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain." This has been at the heart of my work for a number of years, and no doubt will remain at the heart for years to come.
