Please take a seat!
Icy winds and sideways rain made for an adventurous afternoon walk on a much welcomed public holiday. Drifting into the city, heading once again to the comedy festival (great day for laughing), I took temporary shelter amongst the massive glass framework of Federation Square.
Federation Square is a curious place that people seem to either love or hate. I love it! It's not beautiful or grand, I'm not even sure one would call it 'pleasing to the eye', but it is unique and as a gathering place for people - it works!
The Square is home to a multidude of venues. There are the obligatory Bars and Restaurants and 'arty' shops. There is SBS television, the Australian Centre of Moving Images, the Tourism Information Centre, Edge Lecture Theatre, the Ian Potter Gallery (home to the NGV's Australian Art Collection) and the Glass Atrium, home to book markets and one off events. The Squares' structure in itself is designed to promote creative thinking and art is often housed 'inside' the Atrium walls.
Two weeks ago, these walls housed a collection of skateboards. Last week they housed sculptures relating to advertising. This week, they are home to a series of colourful wooden chairs. Painted by celebrities, the furniture is being sold to support the breast cancer foundation of Australia at an aptly named chair-ity auction to be held in May. They provided a very interesting distraction whilst I waited for the hail to pass - and I liked that they seemed so cheery.
I do hope these chairs find good homes to adorn - and (considering the circumstances) preferably at ridiculous prices!
