Easter Monday and the traditional derby match of Aberavon v Neath returns to the rugby calendar. The WRU, in their wisdom, over the past few years have tried to move these derby day fixtures to other parts of the year. Thankfully they have seen sense and restored it to its rightful place at Easter! To think this fixture would have packed the Talbot Athletic ground in the old days, now as you can see you'd be lucky to get about 2,000 people. Granted the weather was awful today but still where have all the rugby fans gone?
It's not as if rugby is not popular anymore, the Millennium Stadium could be sold out twice or three times over for the Six Nations and All Black matches. So there is quite clearly an appetite out there for rugby, so why don't all those fans go and support their local team or regional team? Stupid kick off times and a poor product on the pitch obviously play their part; after all we're there to be entertained but is there more to it?
Maybe there is, perhaps it's the experience of international day that is the new tradition. Everyone knows a Welsh rugby international day is a good day out, the atmosphere, the craic, the drinks, the food and the company. Nothing better!
Me? I'm passionate about rugby and passionate about Neath rugby. Its traditional rugby and rugby full of passion. I'll always be an All Black!
As for today's game, well the less said about that the better, it finished 19-6 to Aberavon.
