The Edge of the Wold

Arnside Highland

"Can you recommend a good barber?"

How do these Highland Cattle see where they're going? This one and her friends and family are grazing the limestone grasslands of Arnside Knott for the National Trust. And over the last few years they have made a visible difference, the coarser grasses are grazed down and the smaller herbs and grasses are coming back into the turf. The Highlands look a bit scarey with their long horns, but they are bomb-proof, unperturbed by people and dogs. As I was kneeling down to take this shot, I turned round to find another cow breathing down the back of my neck. Gentle souls.

I went for an evening walk over the Knott after tea to see the Teesdale Violets which are flowering better this year. It was a bit too dark to get a reasonable photograph of the tiny flowers.
