CASTLE VIEW

Pontefract, a market town in the old West Riding of Yorkshire boasts a wonderful castle. Free entry makes an even better local walk - but do not be put off by the 9 Health & Safety warnings at the entrance - enjoy it for what it is and keep the flag flying.

The town has a liquorice-sweet industry, with the famous Pontefract Cakes being produced, although the liquorice plant itself is no longer grown here. A Liquorice Festival is held annually. The biggest disappointment was the market - it did not sell Pontefract Cakes !
