Chests

Went to Jasra Handicraft Centre to observe how Mr Nasser creates a traditional chest (other countries it's named a hope chest, glory box or trousseau). In the past, the people of Bahrain used traditional chests to store personal belongings and a 'bridal chest' (such as clothing (especially a special dress), table linens, towels, bed linens, quilts and occasionally dishware) was given to a bride at her wedding, by her husband. As young girl, my Mother prepared my trousseau, it came in handy when I got married and I even use some of the items till this day!

These chests are made from Veneer Oak Wood imported from Malaysia, nails from Germany and the brass is originally from Bahrain. Designs are traditional, decorated with golden metal pieces which adds a lot of glamour to them. Nowadays, these chests are used for decoration.
