Day 6

Hallelujah

A day of freedom for No1 son, SWMBO and I.

We headed off to Lefkosia (Nicosia) - but it was shut.
Well it was Sunday - and Palm Sunday at that.
We didn't cross the Green Line into the Turkish side of the island because SWMBO and I only had our driving licenses and No 1 son had no ID so crossing the border could have been a touch problematic.

So we continued on our travels and stopped at a wee village called Peristerona which had 2 lovely churches. One of them was obviously the Turkish mosque (not sure if it was in use) and chalked on the bottom of the minarets was a tick next to the work Turkey. Just before I went to take a picture there was an old man came round with two young children. He was obviously explaining things to them and the wee girl went over and stood rubbing her back over the 'tick' trying to rub it out. Obviously the idea of the Turks having possession of the northern part of the island is still very abhorrent to the locals.

After buying some gorgeous dried fruit we moved on.

We drove up to Troodos. And I mean UP. It is at a point over 450m higher than Ben Nevis (which was the name of the café we had lunch in).
On the way up we stopped and had a snowball fight and No1 son made a snow angel (lying in the snow and moving arms and legs in arcs) and built a snowman ?? albeit a small one because the snow was very crystalline and hard to make into balls.

Lemesos (Limasol) was our next way-point where we turned east and drove along the south shore of Cyprus stopping at Zygi for an ice-cream (doing by the rose flavour ?.. It tastes of cleaning fluid - as No1 son found out.) .

The mosque on the edge of the salt lake next to Larnaka was the next port of call.
A lovely setting - but a great breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Finally, it was up to Cape Greko on the south eastern tip of the island in time for sunset (and the domestic argument between a French family who wouldn't move out of the way for the 3 photographers trying to get 'the shot' lining up the statue and the sunset.
After a good shouting at they took the hint.

This has been a good and most productive day.
