Little Piece of History

The commemoration of the Titanic this week got me thinking about my own little piece of history. My great great great grandfather died in 1862 aboard the Peru when the engine he was stoking exploded. They were in Valparaiso in Chile. I find it astounding that he went all the way from a little village in Argyll such a long distance - leaving behind his wife and child. The Marine Department Board of Trade then wrote to my great great great grandmother to ask her to collect his personal belongings.

I am lucky enough to have inherited all the old family papers which of course will be passed on through the family.
