Jonathan Kreisberg Quartet
The Jonathan Kreisberg Quartet was the latest coup at The Spin jazz club - this was a great evening of lovely melodies, amazing effortless improvisation and some fun exchanges of syncopated rhythms that were thrown from one instrumentatlist to another, sometimes being turned upside down and inside out in the process, but always landing back in a cool rhythmic understated beat, great stuff!
Jonathan Kreisberg is the guitarist and is remarkably skilful: his amazing techinical brilliance is impressive but he doesn't draw attention to it - the fluidity of his playing just makes it all happen. Even when it starts to get complex you just pick up on the groove, are occasionally startled by the change of tune you weren't expecting and then relax into the new beat.
Will Vinson, the saxophonist, who played a couple of weeks ago at The Spin with his own band, played this evening with Jonathan Kreisberg and it was very good to hear some more inventive and beautiful playing from him. I was going to say it made the evening a double treat but that would be to ignore the drummer and bass player each of whom were top musicians and played quite a role in holding it all together. This really is the very best of jazz today! The best place to catch the band is at La Lanterna, New York City.
Another bonus this evening was to hear that the Spin Jazz Club has been shortlisted for an award in the Parliamentary jazz awards - it would be great if it won an award - it must surely be the best jazz club in the country!
