Magic Boots

A couple of years ago, Kyle's favourite movie was Jimmy Grimble, about a teenage footballer whose 'magic' soccer boots - big, old-fashioned opponent-destroyers, salvaged from a rubbish tip - turned him into a star. In real life, however, a new season means new boots, and they get more and more expensive as the colours become more garish. Last term, Kyle's wore orange boots/shoes. Now, for the about-to-start season, they're blinding shades of red and blue. If I'd worn a pair like this at 13, I'd have been been sent home with the coach's taunt ringing in my ears, "Give 'em back to your sister, son, and put on something more appropriate"
