As an aside I often wonder about the economics of plant hire. These machines were owned by a private company and hired to Iarnrod Eireann to do work on the rail lines. Realistically there is no other body that can use them.

So, if the private company can make money by buying these machines and hiring them to Iarnrod Eireann why wouldn't it be cheaper for the train company to just buy them themselves?
