This is the male. The females are very similar but have a paler yellow stomach and a narrower black stripe. Seeing them both together a few times is the best way to learn to tell them apart!

Great tits are a candidate in the clever bird category. Yes really. As they scurry round looking for food, they check out the underside of leaves to look for the shadow of caterpillars. An excellent way of hunting out a well camoflaged beastie. They also tap acorns. If it sounds hollow it probably has a grub inside and is worth breaking open.
