Corkscrew hazel?
I think this is a very ancient corkscrew hazel, as it has the typical gnarled appearance and weeping branches of that species. I doubt however that it was planted by Edward Zouche, as the corkscrew hazel was an invention of Canon Ellacombe of Bitton who propagated it for amusement in the 1860s. It became quite popular with famous gardeners in Victorian times so I imagine this specimen could well be a good hundred years or so old. Let's hope I'm still blipping and perhaps not quite so gnarled when I reach that grand old age!
