Yellow and Grey
Fun Fitness, the indoor playground where I bring the wean, is quite an odd location, up near Lamb Doyle's on the Dublin Mountains. It's surrounded by a huge car park, with long narrow tunnels, like connected bus shelters, so people can stay dry while they walk from their cars. Most of these are vandalised, the heavy glass cracked or smashed, with pale snail-trails of incoherent graffiti. But it's a wonderful place to look over the city, a real launching pad for panoramic views: a great half-circle, from Howth Head to Ballymun and beyond.
He often likes to run around there before we drive home. Sometimes he asks to take a photograph and I let him use the camera-phone, but this time he asked me to take one of him. I wonder if he noticed how perfect that contrast is: bright yellow (rapeseed?) with the sky's 'forty shades of grey', distant rainshowers striding across the city.
