Lilac carpet

Along the wall of Ravelston Golf Club, there is a carpet of lilac flowers. I have been fascinated to find out what they are for a few days. Today was my opportunity to get up close and personal. I am still not entirely sure what they are - they look a little like cuckoo flower, but I don't think so...can anyone help to identify?!
