William H. Seward

I recently finished Killing Lincoln, Bill O'Reilly's gripping account of the Lincoln assassination. I was shocked to discover that a statue of William Seward, Lincoln's Secretary of State, sits within walking distance of my office. (On the night of Lincoln's assassination, Seward miraculously survived an attempt on his own life in the conspirators' effort to overthrow the Union government.)
