Surnames

The Calvert surname originated in Swaledale, North Yorkshire, where they were farmers and lead miners.

The Calvert name derives from "Calf Herd"

One, George Calvert, from a family of tenant farmers near Richmond, came to prominence in the 17th Century. Bright enough to get to Oxford University, he became an MP and Secretary of State to James 1st, and was granted the title of Baron Baltimore.

Among other lands he was given a grant to settle an area of America which became Maryland. The capital, Baltimore, was named after him.

A distiller, Beam Inc. of Chicago, produced this blended Calvert whiskey. The company was taken over by Seagrams and the brand dropped in the 70's.
