the weight of water
the flooding where my parents live was thankfully shortlived and not too life-threatening. however, water there was a-plenty, as they are just up the estuary from the mouth of the aln and the tidal surge that night was pretty huge on top of all the rain and water from further upstream. it's hard to believe, looking at it now, but the river was barely contained under the main road bridge and there was water where there should have been road. now there's debris and damage. this is the footbridge over the river two minutes' walk - but thankfully several metres in elevation - from my parents' house. the railings used to be upright and attached to both side of the path, and that grey smudge in the left side is a lamppost that was upright until the tonnes of water hit it. never forget that water, like fire, is primeval and to be respected at all times as it is far stronger, faster and tougher than we ever will be.
