Getting the measure

A shoddily-built commercial premises that's been empty for years was not the cosiest place to spend a chilly morning but since the day was too miserable to do anything else it was time well spent.

Here Ann and Glyn are measuring up while I am photographing the disrepair. The plan is to lease the building (owned by the Co-op supermarket next door) for the waste food project that is the latest venture of our Transition Town initiative. Surplus food collected from shops and producers will be redistributed in a number of ways from this base. It's hoped that a community cafe will operate here which will not only provide meals and a social centre for local people but will also be a chance for unemployed youngsters to learn catering skills. Before any of that can happen there will need to be planning applications made, fire and health & safety certificates obtained, electrics and plumbing overhauled, painting parties organized, volunteers trained, equipment bought, begged or borrowed... I will keep you posted.

I like the way Ann and Glyn were too intent on their task to notice the dramatic entrance of the Co-op employee who came to check on how we were getting along. Perhaps he could be hired as a greeter when the place is up and running.
