Pond
Today is yet again cold wet and windy. I have to go for an MRI at Addenbrookes about mid-day and we were going to go into Cambridge before this, taking our cameras. In the event I do not feel up to much and the weather is not conducive to photography. It therefore seemed a good idea to picture something closer to home before going for my MRI.
Since the wet weather replenished the water in our dried out pond, as pictured a few days ago, the level has fallen and risen as the rain has first run down from the surrounding hills and then filtered into the ground. Today's picture is of the somewhat enlarged pond, caused by recent heavy rain. It may get much larger still, if this rain continues for several more weeks.
As the ground surrounding the pond has only a relatively small slope, a rise in water level of a foot or so above its present level, causes almost half of the lower lawn to be submerged; this has happened a couple of times in the last 30 years. Although our house is only a few feet above this, there is very little risk of flooding as the surrounding land is very flat, so an immense volume of water would be required to cause a problem. In the 180 or so years that the house has stood here, no such event has happened.
