Homecoming .....
....... Callander, Calasraid in Gaelic.
Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home
This is the first glimpse I get of Callander as I travel home from work each day. I'm usually a bit blase about the scenery but today I had to stop to try and catch the late sun on the hills behind the town.
Situated on the River Teith, Callander is the gateway to the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the first National Park in Scotland. Dominating the town to the north at a height of 343m are Callander Crags, part of the Highland Boundary Fault line which stretches from Helensburgh on the West coast to Stonehaven on the North East coast.
Callander Trivia:
1>Track from the dismantled Callander and Oban Railway was used in the construction of the transit system for the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City
2> The second last person to be tried and imprisoned for the crime of Witchcraft in the UK was Callander woman Helen Duncan, in 1944.
