Bird bath with a play on words. 'Martingale - a bird of dawning'
Martingale:
1. The strap of a horse's harness that connects the girth to the noseband and is designed to prevent the horse from throwing back its head.
2. Nautical: Any of several parts of standing rigging strengthening the bowsprit and jib boom against the force of the head stays.
3. Games: A method of gambling in which one doubles the stakes after each loss.
4. A loose half belt or strap placed on the back of a garment, such as a coat or jacket.
In the second of these definintions the martingale is probably the first part of the boat to meet the water which links in with the 'bird of dawning' - a martin or nightingale. A bit complex for me, but I like it!
The bird bath was given to us by John's dad. Along with one of J's sisters, he and J are in Norwich today at a funeral. John's dad was giving the eulogy for his old friend. Coincidently, I have been to a funeral in Edinburgh of someone who was born near Norwich. Both were much loved men who lived long and fulfilling lives. The words spoken about them were most sincere.
