N is for Newport

It has rained steadily since last night until mid-day today and the pond is now a lake. Mr A is blipping it so I will not, but I have put one for comparison in my Flickr folder with the others in the 'Lower Orchard and Marsh' series.

Today we have N is for Newport as part of PontyCyclopes alphabet challenge; if you look closely you can see Newport on the name board. This picture shows part of Newport Railway Station which stands on the Cambridge to London Liverpool Street railway line. It is a Victoria railway station and has been posted in black and white as it would have been when it was first photographed for postcards.

The station was built in 1845 and the first train went through on 29 July 1845 to much flag waving and cheering from the locals. In November 2010 the station was 'adopted' on behalf of the community by a business association, who propose to make the area more attractive and to provide a café; we shall see.

I wrote an article a long time ago for the Association of Open University Graduates magazine about Newport. At the time I was the Regional Representative for them for Region 06. I discovered that there were nineteen places in the United Kingdom called Newport or with Newport in their name.
