WebDU
Thought I'd better post a conference picture, just to prove that I did actually go, despite being in fab city with lots of sights to see.
The conference, WebDU has been good, but not great. Sometimes you come to events like these and take a ton of learning home. In this case I haven't "learned" a great deal, but I have had to think, and that's been valuable. Thinking about future direction and opportunities, so in some respects, you argue it's been as, if not more valuable. But, the value is harder to recognise.
So, despite what my mind tells me, it's been worthwhile coming. In this particular photo, there are two people who are promoting frameworks for developing mobile apps, one Sencha and one Brightcove. Both appear very good. Also on the panel was (supposedly) one of the brightest JavaScript development minds, Dmitry Baranovskiy. Interesting guy. Apparently just a genius, and a Russian, and very very frank, to the point of being hysterically funny in a way. He clearly has little regard for "non-professional" JavaScript developers and was somewhat disparaging, which to be honest isn't ideal for a person of his stature. No doubt in time he'll learn to become an ambassador and help all those non-professionals reach a higher goal. Or at least, that's why Adobe has just given him a plum job
And then at 5.30 out to dinner with Mrs PS and another friend who has been at the Dementia conference they have been attending. I had to laugh at the tag line on their ticket "Dementia, managing not to forgot". And if you want to know how to prevent it's onset. You need to eat well, exercise, have money, and drink just a little alcohol. Now don't forget that ...
Back to the holes in the wall I have found. busy busy on a Friday night, but we managed to squeeze into a very tiny and hot Chinese restaurant, sharing a table with some locals. Good food and cheap, $30 for 3, with a violin accompaniment form presumably the owner. Wow, more ethnic culture than you could poke a stick at. Amazing also to walk thru Chinatown and night, SO busy.
Finally, down to Darling Harbour for a gelato and to sit on the steps overlooking the harbour and the city lights. Amazing night one again.
A free day tomorrow before flying home tomorrow night, a chance to have a good walk around the city.
