My Beautiful Leith

Today's entry is a small section of a mural which is painted on the gable end of a tenement building in North Junction Street, Leith. I'm sure this mural has been photographed many times (indeed, I have photographed it more than once myself) but, in my opinion, it deserves to be. It was painted by Street Artworks in 1986 and depicts a potted history of Leith from its connection to the sea and the ship building industry which once thrived there, to the Gretna rail disaster, the integration and settlement of the Sikhs within the community and much, much more.

More poignant for me however, is the fact that it sits on the site of what was once David Kilpatrick's Secondary School which was my Dad's old school. Leithers shortened it's name to DK's and, more usually, it was known as "Daft Kids". I don't really know much about the school as it was demolished many years ago but, one thing's for sure, if my Dad and his brothers were anything to go by, I'll bet the teachers more than had their hands full!

Being a Leither born and bred, today's tune is very special to me and I can rarely listen to it without crying a little. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
