Iceland Spar
This colourless transparent variety of Calcite is known as Iceland Spar. Not suprisingly, the name comes from the fact that most of it is found in Iceland. It has the unique optical property of double refraction and was supposedly used by the Vikings to determine the direction of the Sun as a navigational tool.
