Walking back from school, I was struck by the floodlight at the top of the local school. Why is there a floodlight? What is this purpose?

At any rate, it was making nice shadows with the school facade, so I embarked on a (failed, by the looks of it) project to prop my camera just so on my cushy backpack and get a good shot of it.
