Nothing is wasted in the natural world
Took a stroll in my bit of the wildwood again at lunch (see 29/9) it's just great to see it change from week to week as the canopy changes colour and starts to fall to the ground. I have no idea what triggers the growth of fungi but they are nature's great recyclers slowly and noiselessly turning leaves, fallen and dead trees back into nutrients to feed the living. What we see at the surface are the fruiting bodies but beneath the soil and bark are hundreds if not thousands of metres of threadlike 'root' systems all contributing to the decaying process. Fascinating stuff.
