Thomas Chippendale

Thomas Chippendale, a famous Otley cabinet maker, is commemorated by this statue in the town square.

Thomas was baptised in 1718 and after training as a cabinet maker moved to London where he became famous as a furniture designer and maker.

In 1754 he published a book of his designs titled "The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director.".

He undertook many large commissions for his aristocratic clients, including Harewood House and Temple Newsham, both near Leeds.

Thomas died in 1779 and was buried at St Martin in the Fields, in the City of Westminster, London.
