Minuteman Bikeway

Jim and I rode the Minuteman Bikeway today from Bedford to Alewife T (and back again) - about 21 miles. The trail goes through Lexington and Arlington, and although it is flat, the scenery is varied and there are plenty of interesting places to stop. In fact, we had stopped for an ice cream in Lexington when I took this picture. BTW, don't ask for a small ice cream in this part of the world, ask for one scoop otherwise you'll be handed a monster. I should have taken a picture of the ice cream. But I needed both hands to hold it. And I digress.

After consuming the giant ice cream, I needed to walk it off a bit, so we went for a stroll around Lexington Common and admired all the old houses and the Minuteman statue. As all Americans reading this will know, Lexington Common is the site of the first shots in the Revolutionary War (or War of American Independence, as we Brits call it) and the Minutemen were part-time soldiers, expected to be ready at very short notice, hence the name (and also the name of the bikeway). Anyway, Lexington is lovely and the beautiful house in the picture is right on the bikeway itself.

You wouldn't guess from the photo, but the weather was actually quite pleasant and perfect for cycling. Later on, the clouds rolled away and the last part of our ride was in the evening sunshine, and looking good for the rise of tonight's "supermoon". But when we got home and looked out of the window we saw a strange thing - a huge bank of fog was making its way across the ocean! Within minutes we were engulfed. I went down to the beach anyway, you never know - quite a few people had made the trip out to see the moon rise over the ocean. They were all disappointed. I did get some nice pictures of the fog though.
