The traffic here is an absolute nightmare, and it's getting worse day by day. Aside from the fact most of the city is practically gridlocked during rush hour, the accident rate is extremely high because they all drive like complete nutters.

There are no rules of the road like you have in the UK; here it's basically every Omani for himself with no regard for the safety of others.

Common problems are:

Tailgating
Omanis like to drive half a metre behind you whilst flashing their lights continually despite you having no lane to pull into.

Speeding
Seldom is the 120kmph limit stuck to if you own a Hummer.

Indicating
The most under-used piece of motoring equipment in the country.

Queueing
Not necessary at roundabouts or traffic lights, apparently.

Undertaking
Why drive in a lane when you can swerve in and and of three to minimise journey time?

Jail
I've been in two (luckily non serious) accidents so far, and not so long ago I was spared a night in jail for sticking my fingers up at an Omani who all but crashed into me by not stopping at a roundabout. It's okay to almost kill someone, but if that person reacts it's jail and a fine (luckily, my boss was around to diffuse a tense situation and nothing happened to me in the end).

Here is a rather worrying quote from a local website:

'Put another way, thats about 2 (accidents) in every 1000 adults in Oman. Imagine the figures if Omanis were allowed to drink alcohol.

The ROP figure for injuries (probably more accurate than fatalities) is going to be over 10,000 this year. That means, dear reader, if you live in Oman you probably have a 0.5% chance of being injured or killed by a car next year.'
