Cork Stone
I thought I knew England well but I am discovering beautiful places each day. Today I drove to Derbyshire and the village of Birchover for a walk up to and around Stanton Moor. The moor, a large dome shaped sandstone hill, has some superb trees. It also has several stone landmarks, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, and a folly, the Earl Grey Tower, built by a local family to celebrate the passing of the Reform Bill in 1832, which gave men the vote. Women had to wait almost a century for their turn.
This blip shows the Cork Stone, a sandstone megalith shaped, it is said, like a cork, into which footsteps and iron handholds have been inserted to assist climbers. And no, I didn't try it. I think I could have made it up but would certainly have had difficulty getting down. I did not like the idea of sitting up there for who knows how long waiting for assistance.
