Early chaser

Best viewed large.
This year is all topsy-turvy - late house martins, early dragonflies - whatever next?
This is a male broad-bodied chaser, a very common dragonfly around here but not usually until June. I don't think it came out of my pond but it might have done.
My pond is just over a year old and the larvae of this species take between one and two years to develop. I have been finding shed skins of different sizes for the last week or two so it could have been one of mine. I check very frequently but haven't yet had the good fortune to catch one emerging. Maybe tomorrow...
I always find them a bit unnerving when they land after quartering the pond - their head turns to follow you. I just don't expect insects to have reactions like that! Creepy.
