Calne Blue Plaques #6

Wood Street Inc. was my destination at lunchtime today, for my latest Blue Plaque blip. According to the Calne Heritage notes, there is still a burial ground behind this property.

The Quaker Meeting House
Quakerism was strong in Wiltshire and by 1680 the county was covered by a network of Quaker meetings, many in places from which the memory has long vanished.
In 1672 the Quakers in Calne bought a plot of land in Wood Street from their leader, Israel Noyes, a serge maker and built a meeting house on it. The land behind it was used as a burial ground.
They stopped meeting there in early 20th century and the building was leased out, then sold in 1962. It became a commercial premises, but the burial ground still remains.
